History and evolution

The Memory Center at the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing (CEMEERP) was created through Decree D/EERP-18/89, and inaugurated on May 09th of the same year, with a view to actively preserving the history of the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing (EERP), through a collection of documents, texts, images and oral histories, besides enhancing research on the history of this school and Brazilian Nursing. Its specific goals are to:

  1. Preserve the memory and history of the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing 2.    Constitute and preserve a collection of documents, texts, images, oral history, sound and picture files, furniture and objects of the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing, taking care of its treatment, organization and conservation
  2. Constitute a space for reflection and knowledge production on the history of the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing
  3. Develop activities related to the production, preservation, dissemination and discussion of the scientific memory at the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing
  4. Enhance and integrate studies and research at the Ribeirão Preto College of Nursing
  5. Stimulate scientific research on Nursing History through training and service activities.

The CEMERP was not developed at a continuous pace, mainly due to the lack of adequate physical space and human resources, which even culminated in its temporary closure. In August 1999, the CEMEERP was again opened to the public, at another place. During little more than a decade, volunteers and grantees were responsible to take care of the collection, while the Culture and Community Service Commission and the Dean’s Office took charge of coordination.

In 2006, one administrative servant was indicated to specifically work at the CEMEERP, granting a new drive to the activities at this academic-cultural space, which is gradually gaining the status of a didactical and research laboratory for the dissemination of Nursing and EERP history. To prepare this servant, EERP organized training sessions and technical visits and got advice from museum experts. Using resources from the Pro-Rectory of Culture and Community Services, material and equipment was purchased to treat the collection. In 2008, EERP hired a faculty working in the field of Nursing History, who has been contributing to the strengthening and consolidation of the CEMEERP.

Today, the CEMEERP offers:
- training and workshops on preventive conservation of the collection
- obligatory curricular practicums for students in Information and Documentation Science and History
-voluntary monitoring

Every other year, in August, the CEMEERP organizes the Semana Profa. Glete de Alcântara, with a one-week academic program and presentations.
